How Man United should line up vs PSG

Manchester United welcome French champions Paris Saint-Germain to Old Trafford tonight.

Manchester United can seal their place in the knockout phase of the Champions League by avoiding defeat against Paris Saint-Germain tonight.

United have an excellent record at Old Trafford against French opposition, losing just one of their last 15 meetings in all European competitions but that loss did come against PSG in February last year.

The Reds boast a strong home record in Europe, winning each of their last seven games in European competition following the 4-1 victory against Istanbul Basaksehir last time out.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issued a positive injury update on six players ahead of the game meaning he has a number of selection dilemmas to contend with.

Solskjaer played Van de Beek and Fred together at the base of midfield in United’s last Champions League match, but there is no way he should do the same against PSG. The proven defensive midfield duos are Fred and McTominay, who has worked well for United against the French champions twice before.

Despite positive news for David de Gea on his knee injury, Dean Henderson deserves another opportunity in the United goal and the chance to cement himself as the club’s No1. The back four picks itself in front of him, while in attack United need pace and more pace.

Edinson Cavani might have to wait a little longer to make his first United start, despite his Southampton heroics. Greenwood and Rashford could cause havoc and Van de Beek has to get in the side at the moment.

Solskjaer’s selection headache will be in midfield given United are back to full strength. Fred and McTominay’s energy in the middle of the park will be vital and the trusted duo should start. Van de Beek probably deserves to line up but his attributes may not be suited to this game.

Regardless of whether De Gea is fit, Henderson deserves the chance to showcase his abilities in a high-pressure game and the Spaniard’s injury gives Solskjaer the ideal opportunity to put his faith in the 23-year-old.

Cavani must start after his brace against Southampton while Martial and Rashford will fancy their chances against a far-from-intimidating PSG defence.
